A 1951 American epic historical drama directed by Mervyn LeRoy about a Roman general who falls in love with a Christian woman during the reign of Emperor Nero.
Production
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released Quo Vadis in November 1951 after years of development. Shot in Technicolor on location at Cinecitta in Rome, the production was one of the most expensive Hollywood films of its era and revived the studio’s fortunes.
Plot
Returning to Rome from a Britannic campaign, the general Marcus Vinicius meets the Christian hostage Lygia. As the megalomaniacal Nero turns Rome against the new sect, Vinicius is pulled between his career, the empire’s brutalities, and Lygia’s faith.
Reception
Quo Vadis received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Peter Ustinov as Nero, and Best Supporting Actor for Leo Genn as Petronius. The film helped define the Hollywood biblical and Roman epic of the 1950s.
