A 2009 American computer-animated comedy-drama from Pixar about an elderly widower who attaches balloons to his house and travels to South America with a young stowaway scout.
Production
Walt Disney Pictures released Up in May 2009 as Pixar’s tenth feature. Pete Docter directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Bob Peterson. The film’s opening montage, set to Michael Giacchino’s Married Life theme, traces seventy years of a marriage in roughly four minutes.
Story
Seventy-eight-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, recently widowed, refuses to move into a retirement home. He lifts his house with thousands of helium balloons and sets out for Paradise Falls in Venezuela, unaware that a young Wilderness Explorer named Russell is on his porch.
Reception
Up was the first animated film to open the Cannes Film Festival. It earned five Academy Award nominations, won two, and became one of only three animated features ever nominated for Best Picture. The film grossed over 735 million dollars worldwide.
