Production

Warner Bros. released V for Vendetta in March 2006 in the United Kingdom and the United States. The screenplay was adapted by the Wachowskis from the Alan Moore and David Lloyd graphic novel. James McTeigue, the Wachowskis’ longtime first assistant director, made his directorial debut.

Story

In a near-future Britain, a totalitarian Norsefire party rules through curfews, propaganda, and secret detention. A young woman, Evey Hammond, is rescued from a police assault by a masked vigilante known only as V, who plans to detonate the Houses of Parliament on the fifth of November.

Cultural impact

The Guy Fawkes mask worn by V was later adopted as a symbol by activist groups including Anonymous and Occupy Wall Street, becoming one of the most recognizable protest icons of the 2010s. The film grossed over 132 million dollars worldwide.
