A 1983 American road comedy directed by Harold Ramis about the Griswold family's disaster-filled cross-country drive to a theme park called Walley World.
Production
Warner Bros. released National Lampoon’s Vacation in July 1983. John Hughes wrote the screenplay, expanding it from his own 1979 National Lampoon short story Vacation ‘58. Harold Ramis directed Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, with Beverly D’Angelo as Ellen.
Story
Hoping to bond with his wife and two children, Chicago suburbanite Clark Griswold loads the family into a tan station wagon and drives west toward Walley World. The trip is sabotaged by detours, a difficult cousin, a dead aunt, and the eventual closure of the park itself.
Reception
Vacation became a major commercial hit and launched the Griswold series of National Lampoon Vacation films through Christmas Vacation, European Vacation, and Vegas Vacation. The film is widely regarded as one of the defining American comedies of the 1980s.
