Yentl

Filter:

A 1983 American musical drama directed by and starring Barbra Streisand as a young Jewish woman in early-20th-century Poland who disguises herself as a man to study Talmud.

Production

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and United Artists released Yentl in November 1983. Barbra Streisand co-wrote the screenplay with Jack Rosenthal, adapting Isaac Bashevis Singer’s short story Yentl the Yeshiva Boy. Michel Legrand composed the score and Alan and Marilyn Bergman wrote the lyrics.

Story

In 1904 Poland, the village rabbi’s daughter Yentl secretly studies sacred texts that women are forbidden to read. After her father’s death she crops her hair, dons men’s clothes, and enrolls in a yeshiva as Anshel, where she befriends the student Avigdor and is forced to enter a complicated marriage.

Reception

Yentl won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score and earned Barbra Streisand a Golden Globe for Best Director, making her the first woman to win in that category. The film’s release reignited debates about gender categories within Hollywood awards and within Orthodox communities.
