You Only Live Twice

Filter:

A 1967 British spy film directed by Lewis Gilbert, the fifth in the James Bond series, in which Bond investigates the hijacking of American and Soviet spacecraft from a Japanese island.

Production

United Artists released You Only Live Twice in June 1967. Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay, very loosely using Ian Fleming’s 1964 novel as a structural framework. Lewis Gilbert directed the production at Pinewood Studios and on extensive location in Japan, with Ken Adam designing the volcano lair.

Story

After an American space capsule is captured in orbit by an unidentified spacecraft, Bond is sent to Tokyo. With the assistance of Japanese intelligence and the agent Aki, he traces the operation to the volcanic Matsu Island, where Ernst Stavro Blofeld has built a launch facility intended to provoke a superpower war.

Reception

You Only Live Twice grossed over 111 million dollars worldwide and was the first James Bond film to depart significantly from its source novel. The hollow-volcano set, the gyrocopter Little Nellie, and Nancy Sinatra’s title song became signature elements of the larger Bond series.
