Zodiac

Filter:

A 2007 American mystery thriller directed by David Fincher about the hunt for the Zodiac killer who terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Production

Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. co-distributed Zodiac in March 2007. The screenplay by James Vanderbilt drew on the nonfiction books by former San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist Robert Graysmith, who became obsessed with the unsolved case.

Cast and approach

The ensemble includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Graysmith, Mark Ruffalo as Inspector David Toschi, Robert Downey Jr. as crime reporter Paul Avery, and Anthony Edwards. Fincher used digital cameras to give the 1970s sequences a clinical, documentary-like surface.

Reception

Critics praised the film’s procedural detail and restraint, and it has grown in stature over time. The American Film Institute included Zodiac in its top ten films of 2007, and many critics rank it among the strongest crime films of the 21st century.
