Production
Michael Cacoyannis adapted Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel and shot the film on location in Crete in 1964. Anthony Quinn starred as Zorba opposite Alan Bates as the bookish English visitor Basil. Mikis Theodorakis composed the famous score.
Story
Basil arrives on Crete to reopen a lignite mine inherited from his father. He hires Zorba as his foreman, and the two men live and work together among locals while Basil tries to overcome his emotional reserve and Zorba pursues his appetites for life.
Legacy
The film won three Academy Awards and earned Anthony Quinn a Best Actor nomination. Theodorakis’s syrtaki dance music, performed in the closing sequence on the beach, has become one of the most recognizable melodies in international cinema.
