A 1982 rock single by Survivor written for the film "Rocky III" at the request of Sylvester Stallone, built on a heavy palm-muted guitar opening.
Composition
Eye of the Tiger was written by Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan after Sylvester Stallone approached the band requesting a song with a strong percussive opening for the boxing film “Rocky III.”
Reception
The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982 and held the position for six weeks. It won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 1983 ceremony and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Legacy
Eye of the Tiger has become a widely recognized anthem for sports and training montages, used in advertising and at sporting events for decades after its release. It remains the song most associated with Survivor’s catalog.
