Composition
Jeremy was written by Eddie Vedder and Jeff Ament. Vedder has said the lyric was inspired by news coverage of the suicide of Jeremy Wade Delle, a 15-year-old Texas student who shot himself in front of his English class in January 1991.
Reception
Released as the third single from “Ten” in 1992, Jeremy received heavy U.S. modern rock airplay and won the MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year in 1993. The album “Ten” sold over thirteen million copies in the United States.
Legacy
The song’s music video, directed by Mark Pellington, became one of the most-discussed videos of the early 1990s and was a regular fixture on MTV’s “120 Minutes” and other alternative programming.
