A 1965 Bob Dylan single, a six-minute electrified track that helped define the album-era expansion of pop song length and form.
Composition
Like a Rolling Stone was written by Bob Dylan in the summer of 1965 following his decision to move from acoustic folk to electric instrumentation. The lyric is structured as a sustained second-person address.
Recording
The recording was made over two days in New York City with a band that included Mike Bloomfield on guitar and Al Kooper on a Hammond organ part that Kooper improvised on the spot. The track ran more than six minutes, twice the length of most chart singles of its era.
Reception
Released as a single in July 1965, Like a Rolling Stone reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. It has been frequently named one of the most influential rock recordings ever made and was inducted into the National Recording Registry.
