A 1979 Michael Jackson single from "Off the Wall," produced by Quincy Jones, with a smooth disco-funk arrangement and Jackson's tightly phrased lead vocal.
Composition
Rock with You was written by Rod Temperton, formerly of Heatwave, and produced by Quincy Jones for the Off the Wall album. Temperton has said he wrote the song with Jackson’s vocal range carefully in mind.
Reception
Released as the second single from “Off the Wall,” Rock with You reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1980. It became the second of four U.S. top-ten singles from the album.
Legacy
The song’s smooth disco-funk arrangement helped define Jackson’s late-1970s solo sound and the late-disco-era pop landscape. It remains one of the most-played Jackson tracks from his pre-”Thriller” catalog.
