Somebody That I Used to Know was written by Wally De Backer (Gotye) with Kimbra. The track samples a Luiz Bonfa instrumental called “Seville” and structures the lyric as alternating perspectives from former lovers.
Reception
The single reached number one in over twenty countries during 2012, including a multiple-week stay at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It became the best-selling digital single in Australia and one of the year’s biggest international hits.
Legacy
The song won three Grammy Awards at the 2013 ceremony, including Record of the Year. The accompanying body-painted music video, directed by Natasha Pincus, was widely shared and remains among the most-viewed Australian music videos.
