A 1969 Dutch rock band Shocking Blue single, later transformed in 1986 by Bananarama into a Hi-NRG dance-pop number-one, with a distinctive ascending guitar lick.
Composition
Venus was written by Robbie van Leeuwen of the Dutch band Shocking Blue. The arrangement features an ascending guitar riff and Mariska Veres’s lead vocal, with a guitar solo over the song’s two-chord pattern.
Reception
Released in 1969, the single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970, becoming the first Dutch single to top the U.S. chart. It reached the top ten in many other countries.
Bananarama Cover
The British trio Bananarama released a Hi-NRG dance-pop cover in 1986 produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Few songs have topped the U.S. chart in two different versions by different acts.
