A 2013 Beyonce single, a midtempo pop song addressed to a partner against a sense of mortality, with production by Ryan Tedder and Beyonce.
Composition
XO was written by Beyonce, Ryan Tedder, and Terius Nash (The-Dream). The arrangement features synth pads, drum machine programming, and Beyonce’s lead vocal phrased in a more relaxed register than many of her uptempo tracks.
Reception
Released as the third single from Beyonce’s surprise self-titled album, XO reached the top forty on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. The video was filmed at Coney Island.
Legacy
The song’s opening sample of a NASA mission audio drew commentary, and NASA later issued a statement expressing concern about its use. XO has remained one of the most-played tracks from the “Beyonce” album.
