The outermost layer of the adrenal cortex, producing aldosterone to regulate sodium balance and blood pressure.
Structure
Cells of this zone are arranged in tight clusters or arches that resemble glomeruli, giving the layer its name. It is thinner than the zona fasciculata beneath.
Function
Aldosterone acts on the distal nephron to increase sodium reabsorption and potassium loss, expanding extracellular fluid and supporting blood pressure.
Regulation
Output is controlled primarily by the renin-angiotensin system rather than by ACTH, allowing the kidney to drive its own salt balance.
