The innermost layer of the adrenal cortex, producing weak androgens that supplement gonadal sex hormones.
Structure
The cells are arranged in irregular, branching cords, giving the zone a reticular or net-like appearance. They are smaller and contain less lipid than fasciculata cells.
Function
Output peaks during adrenarche around age six to eight, contributing to early pubic and axillary hair development. Adult contribution to circulating androgens is modest but meaningful, especially in women.
Clinical note
Tumors of this zone can produce excess androgens, causing virilization in women and precocious puberty in children.
