Zygomatic Bone

Os zygomaticum

Filter:

The cheekbone, a paired bone that forms the prominence of the cheek and the lateral wall of the eye socket.

Structure

Each zygomatic bone is roughly diamond-shaped, articulating with the frontal, sphenoid, temporal, and maxillary bones. Its lateral surface is convex and gives the face its distinctive cheek contour.

Function

The bone forms the lower and lateral parts of the orbit, protecting the eye, and provides origin for the masseter and zygomaticus muscles used in chewing and smiling.

Clinical note

Zygomatic fractures are common in facial trauma, often producing a flattened cheek and numbness over the area supplied by the infraorbital nerve.
