A 2007 first-person shooter by Irrational Games set in the underwater Objectivist city of Rapture, where the player navigates ruined corridors and genetically altered foes.
Origin
Designed by Ken Levine, BioShock was a spiritual successor to System Shock 2 with a 1960s Art Deco aesthetic. The undersea city of Rapture is a failed Randian utopia inhabited by gene-augmented “splicers” and the iconic Big Daddy guardians.
Gameplay
Players combine traditional weapons with “plasmids” — genetic injections granting elemental powers. Audio diaries scattered throughout the city tell Rapture’s history without conventional cutscenes.
Legacy
BioShock won numerous Game of the Year awards and is regarded as a landmark of narrative-driven first-person design. Its mid-game plot twist became one of the most discussed moments in 21st-century gaming.
