A 1981 side-scrolling shooter arcade game by Williams Electronics where players pilot a starship defending humans on a planet's surface from alien abductors.
Origin
Designed by Eugene Jarvis, Defender introduced horizontal scrolling and a complex five-button control scheme that made it famously difficult. A radar mini-map at the top showed enemies and humans across the wraparound playfield.
Gameplay
Aliens descend to abduct stranded humans; if the abductor reaches the top of the screen, it transforms into a faster mutant. Saving humans rewards bonus points, encouraging strategic play.
Legacy
Defender became one of the top-grossing arcade games of the early 1980s and proved that demanding controls could still draw devoted players. Its scrolling playfield and radar influenced many later shooters.
