A 1984 falling-block puzzle game by Alexey Pajitnov, where players rotate and stack seven-shape tetrominoes to clear horizontal lines.
Origin
Soviet computer engineer Alexey Pajitnov designed Tetris in 1984 at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Centre in Moscow. The seven distinct shapes (tetrominoes), each formed from four squares, fall from the top of the playfield and must be arranged into complete horizontal lines.
Spread
Tetris reached the West through a complicated chain of licensing, ultimately being bundled with the Nintendo Game Boy in 1989 — a pairing that sold over 35 million copies and made the puzzle game synonymous with the handheld.
Legacy
With over 520 million copies sold across platforms, Tetris is one of the best-selling video game franchises in history. It introduced wide audiences to the elegance of simple-rule games and has been ported to nearly every gaming platform ever made.
