A 1972 two-dimensional table-tennis arcade game by Atari that became the first commercially successful video game and launched the gaming industry.
Origin
Designed by Allan Alcorn under the guidance of Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, Pong was initially an internal training exercise. Its simplicity — two paddles, a ball, and a score counter — made it instantly playable to anyone.
Arcade success
Released in November 1972, the arcade cabinet became wildly popular in bars and arcades. Reports of cabinets jamming with quarters made Pong a cultural phenomenon and demonstrated commercial viability for video games.
Legacy
A home version released in 1975 brought Pong into living rooms and helped establish the home console market. Pong is widely regarded as the game that started the video game industry as a mass-market business.
