A 1996 3D platformer by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 that established the template for analog-stick movement and open-environment 3D platforming.
Origin
Directed by Shigeru Miyamoto, Super Mario 64 was a launch title for the Nintendo 64 and was designed alongside the console’s analog Control Stick. Mario’s movement — running, jumping, wall-kicking — translated 2D platforming into a fully three-dimensional space.
Gameplay
The game centers on 15 painting-themed worlds entered from a central castle hub. Each world contains seven Power Stars earned through varied objectives, encouraging exploration and replay.
Legacy
Super Mario 64 is widely credited with defining the language of 3D character control. Its camera system, mission structure, and free-form movement influenced countless 3D platformers and action games.
