A 2018 action-adventure by Santa Monica Studio for the PlayStation 4 that relaunches the series with Kratos and his son Atreus traveling through Norse realms.
Origin
Directed by Cory Barlog, the 2018 reboot dropped the series’ fixed camera and tightly choreographed combos for an over-the-shoulder camera and a slower, more deliberate combat system. Kratos relocates to Midgard after the events of God of War III.
Gameplay
Kratos’s Leviathan Axe replaces the Blades of Chaos for much of the game. His son Atreus participates in combat as an AI companion, firing arrows and translating runic puzzles.
Legacy
God of War won the 2018 Game of the Year at The Game Awards and several other awards. It revived the franchise’s commercial and critical standing and was followed by 2022’s God of War Ragnarok.
