A 1998 Nintendo 64 voice-controlled adventure by Ambrella in which the player befriends Pikachu and gives the Pokemon spoken instructions through the Voice Recognition Unit.
Concept
Hey You, Pikachu! shipped with the Voice Recognition Unit, an N64 microphone that captured the player’s spoken commands. Players asked Pikachu to fetch berries, find friends, and play games over a series of in-game days.
Gameplay
Mini-game segments include fishing with Poliwag, treasure hunting with Mankey, and treasure-hunting with the Squirtle Squad. Pikachu’s recognition of friendly commands shapes its mood.
Legacy
The Voice Recognition Unit was used by only one other major release, the failed N64 port of Densha de Go!. Hey You, Pikachu! remains an early experiment in conversational interaction.
