A 1996 first-person shooter by id Software that introduced fully 3D environments and online multiplayer that became a cornerstone of competitive PC gaming.
Origin
Quake was a major technological leap over Doom, rendering full 3D environments with polygonal models. John Carmack’s engine introduced true 3D level geometry, lighting effects, and support for the new 3D accelerator cards.
Gameplay
Single-player levels span a dark Lovecraftian medieval-industrial setting. The “rocket jump” trick — using rocket splash damage to launch the player — became central to competitive multiplayer.
Legacy
Quake’s online deathmatch helped birth competitive PC gaming as a phenomenon. QuakeCon, the developer community of mappers and modders, and id’s later engines all stem from Quake’s influence.
