Production

Walt Disney Pictures released Coco in November 2017. Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina co-directed and Molina co-wrote the screenplay. The production team made extensive research trips to Mexico to study the iconography and rituals of the Dia de los Muertos holiday.

Story

In the village of Santa Cecilia, twelve-year-old Miguel Rivera dreams of becoming a musician despite a family ban on music. On the night of the Day of the Dead, he is transported into the Land of the Dead, where he searches for his great-great-grandfather, a presumed musician.

Reception

Coco grossed over 814 million dollars worldwide, becoming Pixar’s first major hit in China. It won two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the ballad Remember Me. The film was widely praised for its respectful portrayal of Mexican culture.
