A 2003 American Christmas comedy directed by Jon Favreau about a human raised as one of Santa's elves who travels to New York City to find his biological father.
Production
New Line Cinema released Elf in November 2003. David Berenbaum wrote the screenplay, and Jon Favreau directed Will Ferrell in the title role of Buddy. The production used in-camera forced perspective in the manner of older Rankin/Bass and Christmas television specials.
Story
Buddy, an infant who crawled into Santa’s sack and was raised at the North Pole, learns as an adult that he is human and that his biological father, the publishing executive Walter Hobbs, lives in New York. Buddy travels to Manhattan to meet the family that did not know he existed.
Reception
Elf grossed over 220 million dollars worldwide on a 33 million dollar budget. It established Will Ferrell as a leading-man comedic star, became one of the most-watched Christmas films of the early 21st century, and spawned a long-running Broadway musical adaptation.
