Production

Warner Bros. released Heat in December 1995. Michael Mann had previously made the 1989 television film L.A. Takedown as a pilot for the same story. The film featured the first on-screen meeting between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, who had both appeared in The Godfather Part II.

Plot

Detective Vincent Hanna pursues Neil McCauley, a disciplined career thief whose crew has executed a high-end armored car robbery in Los Angeles. The investigation builds toward a downtown street shootout and a final showdown at LAX.

Reception

Heat earned over 187 million dollars worldwide and has been studied as a landmark of crime cinema. Its bank robbery sequence and the diner conversation between Hanna and McCauley have been frequently cited and imitated by later filmmakers.
