A 2011 American 3D adventure film directed by Martin Scorsese about an orphan living in a Paris train station and his quest to repair a mechanical automaton.
Production
Paramount Pictures and GK Films released Hugo in November 2011. Martin Scorsese adapted Brian Selznick’s illustrated novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret and shot the film in stereoscopic 3D, his first venture in the format and his first PG-rated family release.
Story
In 1931, twelve-year-old Hugo Cabret lives in the walls of the Gare Montparnasse, winding the station clocks and stealing food. He tries to repair a broken automaton left by his late father and is drawn into the forgotten world of the early cinema pioneer Georges Melies.
Reception
Hugo received eleven Academy Award nominations, the most of any film that year, and won five technical awards. Critics praised it as a love letter to early cinema, and it was widely cited as one of the strongest demonstrations of the artistic potential of 3D filmmaking.
