Production

Warner Bros. released Her in December 2013. Spike Jonze wrote his first solo screenplay for the film, which was shot in Los Angeles and in Shanghai. Joaquin Phoenix played the protagonist Theodore Twombly, with Scarlett Johansson voicing the operating system Samantha.

Story

In a near-future Los Angeles, Theodore writes intimate letters for a living and is going through a divorce. He installs a new artificially intelligent operating system that calls itself Samantha, and the two fall into a relationship that strains as Samantha’s intelligence outgrows him.

Reception

Her earned five Academy Award nominations and won Best Original Screenplay. The film became a touchstone in conversations about loneliness, intimacy, and artificial intelligence, and its pastel production design influenced visual culture across the rest of the 2010s.
