King Kong

Filter:

A 1933 American monster adventure film directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack about a giant ape captured on Skull Island and brought to New York City.

Production

RKO Radio Pictures released King Kong in March 1933 at the depth of the Great Depression. Special effects by Willis O’Brien used stop-motion miniatures and rear-projection composites that were unprecedented in scale, and Max Steiner composed a wall-to-wall orchestral score.

Story

Filmmaker Carl Denham sails to a remote island where his crew encounter a colossal ape worshipped by local tribes. They capture the creature, named Kong, and exhibit him in New York, where he escapes, abducts the actress Ann Darrow, and climbs the Empire State Building.

Legacy

King Kong was a massive success that helped rescue RKO from bankruptcy and established a template for monster movies. The image of Kong atop the Empire State Building swatting at biplanes has become one of the most recognized in film history.
