Production

Sony Pictures Classics released Whiplash in October 2014 after the film won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Damien Chazelle had previously shot a short version of the screenplay as a proof of concept to attract financing.

Story

Andrew Neiman, a first-year drummer at the fictional Shaffer Conservatory, is invited into the school’s top studio band by the feared conductor Terence Fletcher. Fletcher’s verbal and physical abuse pushes Andrew toward both extraordinary technical growth and personal collapse.

Reception

Whiplash earned five Academy Award nominations and won three, including Best Supporting Actor for J. K. Simmons as Fletcher. The film established Damien Chazelle, then twenty-nine years old, as one of his generation’s most prominent American directors.
