Production

Columbia Pictures released Wolf in June 1994. Mike Nichols directed from a screenplay by Jim Harrison and Wesley Strick. Jack Nicholson starred as the publishing editor Will Randall, opposite Michelle Pfeiffer as Laura Alden and James Spader as his ambitious junior editor Stewart Swinton.

Story

On a snowy road in Vermont, mild-mannered editor Will Randall hits a wolf, is bitten, and finds his senses sharpening over the following days. As Will discovers a corporate plot by Stewart at the publishing house, the lupine changes in his body deepen toward something predatory.

Reception

Wolf grossed over 131 million dollars worldwide and was Mike Nichols’s biggest commercial hit of the 1990s. The film was praised for its central performances and for Rick Baker’s gradual makeup effects on Nicholson, which transformed a corporate satire into a literary werewolf tale.
