Production

Released in 2000 by 20th Century Fox, X-Men launched the modern superhero film cycle. Bryan Singer directed; the cast included Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and Halle Berry as Storm.

Plot setup

Set in a near-future America where mutants are feared and persecuted, the film follows Wolverine and Rogue as they join Professor Xavier’s school for mutants while Magneto plots to “evolve” world leaders into mutants by force.

Legacy

The film grossed about 296 million dollars worldwide on a 75 million dollar budget, spawned a long-running franchise, and is widely credited with re-establishing the comic-book movie as a mainstream genre.
