Production
Universal Pictures released Xanadu in August 1980. The film paired Olivia Newton-John, fresh off Grease, with Gene Kelly in his final film role, and featured songs written by Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra and John Farrar.
Reception
Critics panned the film, and it helped inspire the creation of the Golden Raspberry Awards. The soundtrack, however, became a major commercial success, with two singles reaching the top ten in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Legacy
Despite its initial reputation, Xanadu has been reclaimed as a cult favorite and was adapted into a successful Broadway musical in 2007 that ran for over five hundred performances and received four Tony nominations.
