A 2003 American superhero film directed by Bryan Singer in which the X-Men ally with their enemy Magneto to stop a paramilitary attack on mutants led by William Stryker.
Production
20th Century Fox released X2 in May 2003, three years after the first X-Men film. Bryan Singer returned as director, with a screenplay by Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris, and David Hayter. The cast was expanded with Brian Cox as Colonel William Stryker and Alan Cumming as the teleporter Nightcrawler.
Story
After a White House assassination attempt by the teleporting mutant Nightcrawler, Colonel William Stryker uses the incident as a pretext to launch a raid on Professor Xavier’s school. Wolverine, Storm, Jean Grey, and others must temporarily ally with Magneto and Mystique to free captured students.
Reception
X2 grossed over 407 million dollars worldwide, surpassing its predecessor commercially and critically. It is widely cited as one of the strongest superhero sequels and helped solidify the X-Men franchise that ran at 20th Century Fox until the studio’s acquisition by Disney in 2019.
