A 1973 piano ballad by Elton John and Bernie Taupin originally written about Marilyn Monroe, later rewritten in 1997 to memorialize Diana, Princess of Wales.
Original Version
Candle in the Wind was written by Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin for the 1973 album “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” Taupin’s lyrics addressed Marilyn Monroe with the line “Goodbye Norma Jean,” referencing her birth name.
1997 Rewrite
After the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997, Taupin rewrote the verses to begin “Goodbye England’s Rose.” John performed the new version at Diana’s funeral at Westminster Abbey in September of that year.
Reception
The 1997 single became one of the best-selling singles in recorded music history, with worldwide sales reported above thirty million copies. Proceeds were directed to a memorial fund established in Diana’s name.
