Creep

Filter:

A 1992 alternative rock single by Radiohead about social alienation, marked by a heavily distorted guitar transition into the chorus.

Composition

Creep was written by the members of Radiohead, with portions of the chord movement crediting Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood for similarity to “The Air That I Breathe.” Jonny Greenwood’s abrupt muted guitar bursts before each chorus became one of the song’s signatures.

Reception

Initially released in September 1992 to little notice, Creep gained airplay in Israel and on U.S. college radio in 1993 and was re-released to wider success in the UK. The song reached the top ten in several countries.

Legacy

Although the band moved away from playing it for years afterward, Creep returned to setlists periodically and remains Radiohead’s most commercially recognized single. It has been covered widely, including a string-quartet arrangement used in the 2010 film “The Social Network.”
