Heroes was written by David Bowie and Brian Eno during the recording sessions for the album of the same name in West Berlin. Bowie has said the lyric was inspired in part by seeing producer Tony Visconti embrace a woman near the Berlin Wall.
Recording
Robert Fripp contributed the song’s sustained, layered guitar lines, recorded using feedback and three microphones at varied distances from Bowie’s vocal to create gradual volume buildup through the track.
Reception
On initial release the single was a modest chart performer. It has grown in stature since, including a notable 1987 performance Bowie gave near the Berlin Wall and a documented effect on the wall’s eventual fall in 1989.
