Origins
Hurt was written and recorded by Trent Reznor for the 1994 Nine Inch Nails album “The Downward Spiral.” The original is an industrial-rock arrangement with distorted textures and Reznor’s plaintive vocal.
Johnny Cash Version
Johnny Cash recorded Hurt in 2002 with producer Rick Rubin for the fourth in his “American Recordings” series. The arrangement is stripped to acoustic guitar and piano, with Cash performing a few months before his death in 2003.
Reception
The Cash version’s accompanying video, directed by Mark Romanek, intercut Cash and his wife June Carter Cash with archival footage and was released to widespread acclaim. Reznor publicly described the cover as having taken full ownership of the song.
