Composition
Imagine was written by John Lennon with contributions from Yoko Ono, who Lennon later said had inspired several of the song’s lines and themes. The piano figure was composed at Lennon’s Steinway in Tittenhurst Park.
Recording
Producer Phil Spector worked with Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band on the recording. A small string ensemble was added in New York and the final mix reflects a deliberately simple, anthemic frame.
Reception
On initial release the single reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one in several other countries. Following Lennon’s death in 1980, the song topped UK and U.S. charts again and became closely identified with calls for peace.
