Kiss

Filter:

A 1986 Prince single, a stripped funk track with a falsetto lead vocal that originally began as a demo for the group Mazarati.

Composition

Kiss was originally written by Prince as a demo for the group Mazarati, with whom his associate David Z was working. After hearing the reworked recording, Prince reclaimed the song for himself and reworked it for his “Parade” album.

Recording

The recording features a minimal arrangement with drums, electric guitar, and Prince’s falsetto vocal. The track is notable for the absence of bass guitar throughout.

Reception

Released in 1986, the single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the U.S. R&B chart. It won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 1987 ceremony, with the Revolution sharing credit on the recording.
