A 1975 ABBA single that gave its title to the later jukebox musical and film featuring the band's songs, with an arpeggiated marimba-like keyboard introduction.
Composition
Mamma Mia was written by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson. The arrangement opens with an arpeggiated marimba-like keyboard part played by Andersson, followed by the dual lead vocals of Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.
Reception
Released as a single in late 1975, Mamma Mia reached number one in Australia and the United Kingdom in 1976. The song revived ABBA’s chart presence in Britain, where their previous Eurovision success had faded.
Legacy
The song became the title and centerpiece of the 1999 jukebox musical and the 2008 and 2018 films starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and an ensemble cast. The musical has been performed in over fifty productions worldwide.
