A 1969 Frank Sinatra single adapted from the 1967 French song "Comme d'habitude," with new English lyrics written by Paul Anka.
Composition
My Way is built on the music of “Comme d’habitude” by Claude Francois and Jacques Revaux, originally a 1967 French ballad. Paul Anka wrote new English lyrics for Frank Sinatra, recasting the song as a retrospective look at a life lived on one’s own terms.
Recording
Sinatra recorded the track in December 1968 with arranger Don Costa. The arrangement begins quietly and gradually expands to a full orchestral climax in the closing verse.
Reception
The single reached the top thirty on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, where it eventually spent over seventy non-consecutive weeks on the chart, a record at the time. It became Sinatra’s defining late-career signature song.
