Nothing Compares 2 U

Filter:

A 1985 Prince song originally recorded by The Family, transformed in 1990 by Sinead O'Connor's stark vocal version into a worldwide number one.

Origins

Nothing Compares 2 U was written by Prince and recorded in 1985 by his side project The Family, on whose self-titled album it first appeared with little notice.

O’Connor Recording

Sinead O’Connor recorded the song with producer Nellee Hooper for her second album. The arrangement is built on a sustained low-key keyboard and her single-take vocal, with a music video directed by John Maybury composed almost entirely of a long close-up of her face.

Reception

Released in early 1990, the single reached number one in over twenty countries and topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. It won three MTV Video Music Awards in 1990, including Video of the Year.
