Composition
Thriller was written by Rod Temperton, who originally titled it “Starlight.” Quincy Jones produced the track with sound effects including doors creaking, wolves howling, and footsteps to support the horror-film theme.
Music Video
The fourteen-minute music video, directed by John Landis and choreographed by Michael Peters, debuted on MTV in December 1983. The video transformed expectations for the long-form music video format and remained in heavy rotation for years.
Reception
The single reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984. The album “Thriller” spent 37 non-consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 and is among the best-selling albums in recorded music history.
