Time After Time

Filter:

A 1984 Cyndi Lauper single, a soft-pop ballad with synthesizer texture and a chorus phrase echoed across decades of pop culture.

Composition

Time After Time was written by Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman of The Hooters during the recording sessions for her debut album “She’s So Unusual.” Lauper has said the title was inspired by a TV Guide listing for the 1979 film “Time After Time.”

Reception

Released in 1984, the single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in June, becoming Lauper’s first U.S. number-one single. It earned a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year at the 1985 ceremony.

Legacy

The song has been recorded by over a hundred artists, including a jazz arrangement by Miles Davis on his 1985 album “You’re Under Arrest.” It remains the most-covered song from Lauper’s catalog.
