Waterloo was written by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson. The lyric draws on Napoleon’s 1815 defeat as a metaphor for surrendering to love, set to a brisk glam rock arrangement.

Eurovision

ABBA performed the song representing Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Brighton in April 1974, winning the competition. The performance is widely cited as the launch of ABBA’s international career.

Reception
