While My Guitar Gently Weeps was written by George Harrison and developed over several months in 1968. Harrison has said the song was prompted by randomly opening an “I Ching” text.
Recording
Harrison invited Eric Clapton to play lead guitar on the recording, with Clapton agreeing on the condition that his contribution not be officially credited on the album. The take was completed during a session at Abbey Road in September 1968.
Legacy
The song was included on multiple Beatles compilation albums and remains the most-covered song from Harrison’s Beatles catalog. Prince played a memorable rendition at the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Harrison.
